Great Glen Way & Island Heritage
Een spectaculaire tocht van Inverness, de hoofdstad van de Highlands, langs de oever van Loch Ness naar Fort William en door naar Oban. U fietst op speciale paden en rustige bospaden en zult genieten van de prachtige uitzichten op lochs en bergen en zeer waarschijnlijk ziet u ook herten en arenden. Tijdens uw rustdag in Fort William zou u Ben Nevis kunnen beklimmen, kunnen fietsen naar Oban via Isle of Lismore of een tocht met The Jacobite Steam Train kunnen maken.
De korte routebeschrijving
DAY 1. Arrive INVERNESS: collect cycles and equipment, route briefing and instruction. Inverness now a thriving modern town has historical links going back to Neolithic times. Many battles have been fought for control of this strategic site. A visit to the Garrison Castle Encounter will take you back to 1745 and the Jacobite Rebellion.
DAY 2. INVERNESS – DRUMNADROCHIT 24ml (39km)
Leave Inverness following the river: across moorland and quiet country roads to Drumnadrochit. Visit the Loch Ness Monster Exhibition Centre and ruined Urquhart Castle.
DAY 3. DRUMNADROCHIT – FORT AUGUSTUS 23ml (37km)
Follow the Cycle Way of the Great Glen. Some steep hills are rewarded with beautiful views of Loch Ness and the mountains beyond. In the forest you may see deer or golden eagles before you reach the south end of the loch at Fort Augustus.
DAY 4. FORT AUGUSTUS – FORT WILLIAM 34ml (55km)
The Caledonian Canal towpath and forest tracks keep you safe from traffic until you reach the locks of Neptune’s Staircase at Banavie. A short ride to the busy tourist town of Fort William in the shadow of mighty Ben Nevis.
DAY 5. Rest Day FORT WILLIAM
Take a trip on the steam train of the scenic West Highland Railway to Mallaig, climb Ben Nevis or explore the many forest trails in Leanachan Forest.
DAY 6. FORT WILLIAM – OBAN 39ml (62km)
Lots of ferry crossings today, first to Camnusnagaul, then back across Loch Linnhe to Corran and Port Appin to the island of Lismore. This pretty but sparsely populated island is home to a farming community and was an important religious centre from the sixth to the fifteenth centuries. A visit to the Old Schoolhouse, home of the Island’s Historical Society will enable you to find out more about its history. Lastly an evening ferry from Lismore to Oban.
DAY 7. Rest Day OBAN 42ml (67km)
Perhaps cycle to Dunstaffnage Castle or visit the island of Kerrera or take the ferry to Craignure on Mull and cycle to Tobermory
